Tour Plan

Morning Pickup and Transfer to Materuni Village

Your day begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Moshi by your professional English-speaking guide from Materuni Village Experience. Enjoy a scenic drive to Materuni Village, located approximately 15 kilometres from Moshi, where the Chagga people maintain many of their cultural traditions. Upon arrival, complete the village registration before beginning your adventure.

Guided Walk to Materuni Waterfall

Begin a guided walk through the beautiful countryside surrounding Materuni Village. Follow village paths past local farms, coffee and banana plantations, and lush vegetation while your guide introduces you to Chagga culture, village life, and the area's natural environment. The walk takes approximately 40 minutes, depending on your pace and trail conditions.

Upon reaching Materuni Waterfall, admire the impressive cascade plunging more than 80 metres into the natural pool below. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, take photographs, and, when conditions are safe, have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing water. On clear days, you may also enjoy beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Traditional Chagga Lunch and Coffee Experience

After visiting the waterfall, return to the village and visit a local home for a traditional Chagga lunch prepared with local ingredients. Depending on availability, you may also have the opportunity to sample traditional banana beer.

Continue with an engaging coffee-making experience, where local hosts introduce you to the cultivation, drying, roasting, and processing of coffee beans. Participate in traditional grinding methods and help prepare your own cup of freshly brewed coffee. The experience is often accompanied by Chagga songs and dances, offering an enjoyable way to discover the community's cultural heritage and coffee-making traditions.

Visit Moshi Railway Station and the Famous Moshi Sign

After completing your Materuni Village experience, travel to Moshi town for a guided exploration of its history and everyday life. Visit the historic railway station and learn about the development of railway transport in the region and its importance in connecting communities and supporting trade. Your guide will share relevant historical information about the station and its regional significance.

Continue to the famous Moshi town sign, where you can stop for photographs and capture a memorable reminder of your visit to this lively town.

Explore Mbuyuni Market

Continue on foot to Mbuyuni Market, a lively local marketplace where residents shop for fresh food and everyday essentials. Explore the stalls displaying tropical fruits, vegetables, and other regional produce while observing the daily interactions between local traders and shoppers.

Your guide will introduce you to the market's atmosphere, explain the importance of local produce in everyday Tanzanian life, and help you discover unfamiliar fruits and vegetables. Depending on the season, you may see pineapples, watermelons, avocados, and other locally available produce. Take your time exploring the market, asking questions, and photographing the vibrant surroundings where appropriate.

Personalised Moshi Town Experience and Return

Conclude your walking tour after approximately one to two hours of exploring Moshi town, depending on your interests and pace. If you would like to visit a souvenir shop, explore another local attraction, or be dropped off at a different location, let your guide know in advance or during the tour so arrangements can be made where possible.

Your Materuni Village Experience guide will be happy to share recommendations and help you make the most of your time in Moshi. Your experience concludes with a memorable combination of waterfall scenery, Chagga coffee traditions, local cuisine, historic landmarks, and authentic town life.

Great excursion to the waterfall with a coffee tour Very nice hike with our guide William to the waterfall at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. He told us a lot about the plants, animals, and Materuni. Afterwards, we were allowed to learn how coffee is made from raw coffee beans. Freshly brewed, really very delicious! A warm meal rounded off the beautiful day. We can highly recommend this excursion.

Super tourist Great to do. First a nice walk around the area. And slowly you hear the waterfall and when you are there it gives you a beautiful view of the waterfall. Walking back, you come to the coffee plantation and first get a super lunch. After lunch, everything is told about the beans and what you need to make coffee. After the explanation, you will grind beans the old-fashioned way. And it was sung. After grinding, the coffee is brewed and deliciously drunk.

Amazing Materuni ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A highly recommended experience! We hiked to Materuni Waterfalls, had a big and tasty lunch at the village, and then visited the coffee plantations and enjoyed the traditional coffee ceremony, taking part in the whole process. We had such a great time! A special mention to our guide, Colman Alexander, who was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He is also a botanist, so along the way he taught us lots of interesting things about the local plants, wildlife and culture, which made the experience even more special. We’d also like to thank our driver, who was very kind and attentive throughout the day and made all our transfers comfortable and enjoyable. We 100% recommend Colman Alexander and this whole experience. Definitely worth it if you’re visiting the Kilimanjaro area! 🌿🏔️☕️

Great waterfall hike and coffee experience with Silvester We had a wonderful day at Materuni, thanks largely to our guide Silvester. He led us to the waterfalls with great knowledge and answered all our questions, yet was never intrusive, giving us time to enjoy the scenery at our own pace. The coffee experience afterwards was a lovely highlight too. Friendly, calm and very competent, highly recommended

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An amazing experience with Robert in Materuni* We had an absolutely fantastic experience in Materuni with our local guide, Robert. From the very beginning, he was incredibly friendly, attentive and professional, and he made the whole experience truly special. We visited the Materuni Waterfalls, where Robert taught us so much about the local culture, vegetation, wildlife and the area in general. He has a huge amount of knowledge and clearly loves sharing it with visitors. We then enjoyed a delicious local meal and learned about the whole coffee-making process — from how the coffee is picked to how it is traditionally prepared. And, of course, we got to taste it at the end! It was a really authentic and fascinating experience. Robert speaks excellent English, explains everything very clearly and is always happy to answer questions. He also took amazing photos of us, capturing some really special moments that we will keep as memories of our trip. What made the experience even better was the opportunity to learn about Materuni and Tanzanian culture from someone so passionate and knowledgeable. We highly recommend this experience, and especially Robert as a guide. If you are visiting the area, don’t hesitate to book it — you won’t regret it! Thank you so much, Robert, for such an unforgettable day! 🇹🇿❤️

Colman’s enthusiasm and professionalism really made the difference and turned an already amazing excursion into something truly special.
