Tour Plan
Morning Pickup and Transfer to Materuni Village
Your day begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Moshi by your professional English-speaking guide from Materuni Village Experience. Enjoy a scenic drive to Materuni Village, located approximately 15 kilometres from Moshi, where the Chagga community maintains many of its traditional customs and cultural practices. Upon arrival, complete the village registration before beginning your exploration.
Guided Hike to Materuni Waterfall
Set off on a guided walk through the beautiful landscapes surrounding Materuni Village. Follow village paths past coffee and banana plantations, local farms, and lush vegetation while learning about Chagga culture, village life, and the area's natural environment. The walk takes approximately 40 minutes, depending on your pace and trail conditions.
Upon reaching Materuni Waterfall, admire the impressive cascade plunging more than 80 metres into the pool below. Take photographs, appreciate the peaceful surroundings, and enjoy the opportunity to swim in the natural pool when conditions are safe. On clear days, the surrounding landscape may also reveal beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Traditional Chagga Lunch and Coffee Experience
After enjoying the waterfall, return to the village and visit a local home for a traditional Chagga lunch prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Depending on availability, you may also have the opportunity to sample traditional banana beer.
Continue with an authentic coffee-making experience, where local hosts introduce you to the cultivation, drying, roasting, and processing of coffee beans. Participate in traditional grinding methods and help prepare your own cup of freshly brewed coffee. The experience is often accompanied by Chagga songs and dances, creating a lively cultural encounter and an opportunity to appreciate the community's coffee-making traditions.
Begin the Moshi Countryside Cycling Adventure
After completing the Materuni Village activities, continue with your cycling experience around Moshi. Before setting off, your guide will provide a safety briefing and help ensure that your bicycle is suitable for the journey. Begin riding through Moshi's streets before moving into the surrounding countryside, where the urban environment gradually gives way to rural settlements, open fields, and agricultural landscapes.
Explore Sugar Cane Plantations and Rural Communities
Continue cycling through the extensive sugar cane-growing areas surrounding Moshi. Observe the plantations and learn about the importance of sugar cane farming to the local economy. Depending on the selected route and farming activities, your guide may explain how the crop is cultivated, harvested, and processed.
The ride then continues towards a nearby river and an old bridge connecting local communities and agricultural areas. Cross the bridge where permitted and continue along the countryside roads towards neighbouring villages, enjoying opportunities to photograph the landscapes and observe everyday rural life.
Nature, Wildlife and Countryside Lunch Stop
Ride further into the surrounding natural areas, including a conservation area where local birdlife, monkeys, and other small wildlife may be spotted. Your guide will help you identify interesting plants and animals along the route, although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Around midday, take a break at a local restaurant with a garden setting. Enjoy lunch, relax after the ride, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside before continuing your cycling adventure.
Return Cycling Route and Scenic Mountain Views
After lunch, begin the return journey towards Moshi along a different section of the route, where possible. Cycle through quiet rural roads, open agricultural landscapes, and local communities while enjoying more opportunities for photographs and interaction with residents.
As the journey progresses, admire views of Mount Meru and, when the skies are clear, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. The cycling route and duration may be adjusted according to weather, road conditions, and your comfort level.
End of the Tour and Return Transfer
Conclude your cycling adventure in Moshi or arrange a vehicle transfer back to your hotel or lodge, depending on the agreed itinerary. After a rewarding day of waterfall hiking, coffee tasting, cultural discovery, and countryside cycling, enjoy a comfortable return and reflect on your experience exploring the Kilimanjaro region with Materuni Village Experience.

Great excursion to the waterfall with a coffee tour Very nice hike with our guide William to the waterfall at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. He told us a lot about the plants, animals, and Materuni. Afterwards, we were allowed to learn how coffee is made from raw coffee beans. Freshly brewed, really very delicious! A warm meal rounded off the beautiful day. We can highly recommend this excursion.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Super tourist Great to do. First a nice walk around the area. And slowly you hear the waterfall and when you are there it gives you a beautiful view of the waterfall. Walking back, you come to the coffee plantation and first get a super lunch. After lunch, everything is told about the beans and what you need to make coffee. After the explanation, you will grind beans the old-fashioned way. And it was sung. After grinding, the coffee is brewed and deliciously drunk.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Amazing Materuni ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A highly recommended experience! We hiked to Materuni Waterfalls, had a big and tasty lunch at the village, and then visited the coffee plantations and enjoyed the traditional coffee ceremony, taking part in the whole process. We had such a great time! A special mention to our guide, Colman Alexander, who was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He is also a botanist, so along the way he taught us lots of interesting things about the local plants, wildlife and culture, which made the experience even more special. We’d also like to thank our driver, who was very kind and attentive throughout the day and made all our transfers comfortable and enjoyable. We 100% recommend Colman Alexander and this whole experience. Definitely worth it if you’re visiting the Kilimanjaro area! 🌿🏔️☕️Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Great waterfall hike and coffee experience with Silvester We had a wonderful day at Materuni, thanks largely to our guide Silvester. He led us to the waterfalls with great knowledge and answered all our questions, yet was never intrusive, giving us time to enjoy the scenery at our own pace. The coffee experience afterwards was a lovely highlight too. Friendly, calm and very competent, highly recommendedPosted on Tripadvisor![]()

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An amazing experience with Robert in Materuni* We had an absolutely fantastic experience in Materuni with our local guide, Robert. From the very beginning, he was incredibly friendly, attentive and professional, and he made the whole experience truly special. We visited the Materuni Waterfalls, where Robert taught us so much about the local culture, vegetation, wildlife and the area in general. He has a huge amount of knowledge and clearly loves sharing it with visitors. We then enjoyed a delicious local meal and learned about the whole coffee-making process — from how the coffee is picked to how it is traditionally prepared. And, of course, we got to taste it at the end! It was a really authentic and fascinating experience. Robert speaks excellent English, explains everything very clearly and is always happy to answer questions. He also took amazing photos of us, capturing some really special moments that we will keep as memories of our trip. What made the experience even better was the opportunity to learn about Materuni and Tanzanian culture from someone so passionate and knowledgeable. We highly recommend this experience, and especially Robert as a guide. If you are visiting the area, don’t hesitate to book it — you won’t regret it! Thank you so much, Robert, for such an unforgettable day! 🇹🇿❤️Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
