Tour Plan

Morning Pickup and Transfer to Materuni Village

Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Moshi by your professional English-speaking guide from Materuni Village Experience. Enjoy a scenic drive to Materuni Village, located approximately 15 kilometres from Moshi, on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival, complete the village registration before beginning your exploration of the area.

Guided Hike to Materuni Waterfall

Begin a guided walk through Materuni's beautiful countryside, passing local farms, coffee and banana plantations, and lush vegetation. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the traditions of the Chagga people, explain aspects of village life, and point out interesting plants and features of the surrounding landscape. On clear days, you may enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After approximately 40 minutes of walking, depending on your pace and trail conditions, arrive at Materuni Waterfall. Admire the impressive cascade plunging more than 80 metres into the natural pool below. Take photographs, appreciate the peaceful surroundings, and enjoy the opportunity to swim when conditions are safe.

Traditional Chagga Lunch and Coffee Experience

After your waterfall visit, return to the village and head to a local home for a traditional Chagga lunch prepared with local ingredients. Depending on availability, you may also have the opportunity to sample traditional banana beer.

Continue with an authentic coffee-making experience, where local hosts introduce you to the cultivation, drying, roasting, and processing of coffee beans. Participate in traditional grinding methods and help prepare your own cup of freshly brewed coffee. The activity is often accompanied by traditional Chagga songs and dances, providing an enjoyable insight into the community's cultural heritage.

Scenic Drive to a Maasai Village

After completing the Materuni Village activities, continue towards a Maasai village for a cultural visit. Enjoy a scenic drive through the countryside, passing African bushland, acacia and baobab trees, dry riverbeds, and sugar cane plantations. The changing landscapes offer an opportunity to appreciate the natural diversity of the Kilimanjaro region and surrounding areas.

Maasai Cultural Experience

Upon arrival, meet members of the Maasai community and learn about their traditional way of life. Accompanied by your guide, explore the village and discover aspects of Maasai culture, including traditional homes, customs, daily activities, and community practices.

You will have opportunities to interact with local residents and ask questions about their heritage and lifestyle. Your English-speaking guide can help facilitate communication and interpretation where needed. Please respect local customs and always ask permission before taking photographs of residents or their homes.

During the visit, learn about traditional Maasai medicine and how selected local plants are used in customary healing practices. You may also have the opportunity to taste traditional Maasai tea and visit a Maasai home, depending on the community's arrangements and availability.

Return to Your Hotel

In the late afternoon, say goodbye to your hosts and begin the return journey to your accommodation. Reflect on a rewarding day filled with waterfall scenery, traditional coffee making, local cuisine, and meaningful cultural encounters with the Chagga and Maasai communities.

Great excursion to the waterfall with a coffee tour Very nice hike with our guide William to the waterfall at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. He told us a lot about the plants, animals, and Materuni. Afterwards, we were allowed to learn how coffee is made from raw coffee beans. Freshly brewed, really very delicious! A warm meal rounded off the beautiful day. We can highly recommend this excursion.

Super tourist Great to do. First a nice walk around the area. And slowly you hear the waterfall and when you are there it gives you a beautiful view of the waterfall. Walking back, you come to the coffee plantation and first get a super lunch. After lunch, everything is told about the beans and what you need to make coffee. After the explanation, you will grind beans the old-fashioned way. And it was sung. After grinding, the coffee is brewed and deliciously drunk.

Amazing Materuni ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A highly recommended experience! We hiked to Materuni Waterfalls, had a big and tasty lunch at the village, and then visited the coffee plantations and enjoyed the traditional coffee ceremony, taking part in the whole process. We had such a great time! A special mention to our guide, Colman Alexander, who was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He is also a botanist, so along the way he taught us lots of interesting things about the local plants, wildlife and culture, which made the experience even more special. We’d also like to thank our driver, who was very kind and attentive throughout the day and made all our transfers comfortable and enjoyable. We 100% recommend Colman Alexander and this whole experience. Definitely worth it if you’re visiting the Kilimanjaro area! 🌿🏔️☕️

Great waterfall hike and coffee experience with Silvester We had a wonderful day at Materuni, thanks largely to our guide Silvester. He led us to the waterfalls with great knowledge and answered all our questions, yet was never intrusive, giving us time to enjoy the scenery at our own pace. The coffee experience afterwards was a lovely highlight too. Friendly, calm and very competent, highly recommended

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An amazing experience with Robert in Materuni* We had an absolutely fantastic experience in Materuni with our local guide, Robert. From the very beginning, he was incredibly friendly, attentive and professional, and he made the whole experience truly special. We visited the Materuni Waterfalls, where Robert taught us so much about the local culture, vegetation, wildlife and the area in general. He has a huge amount of knowledge and clearly loves sharing it with visitors. We then enjoyed a delicious local meal and learned about the whole coffee-making process — from how the coffee is picked to how it is traditionally prepared. And, of course, we got to taste it at the end! It was a really authentic and fascinating experience. Robert speaks excellent English, explains everything very clearly and is always happy to answer questions. He also took amazing photos of us, capturing some really special moments that we will keep as memories of our trip. What made the experience even better was the opportunity to learn about Materuni and Tanzanian culture from someone so passionate and knowledgeable. We highly recommend this experience, and especially Robert as a guide. If you are visiting the area, don’t hesitate to book it — you won’t regret it! Thank you so much, Robert, for such an unforgettable day! 🇹🇿❤️

Colman’s enthusiasm and professionalism really made the difference and turned an already amazing excursion into something truly special.
