5 Days Kilimanjaro Hiking Via Marangu Route
Tour Highlight
5 Days Kilimanjaro Hiking Via Marangu Route is a popular trekking option for those looking to summit Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. This route is known for its scenic beauty and gradual ascent, making it a more manageable climb for those who are less experienced or have less time to spare. The Marangu route starts at the Marangu Gate and winds through forests, moorlands, and alpine deserts before reaching the summit. Along the way, trekkers will stay in huts instead of tents, making the journey more comfortable. Despite its popularity, the climb is still a challenging and rewarding experience that requires physical fitness and mental toughness
Tour Plan
Leave Moshi at 8am for Marangu Gate. The drive to Marangu takes approximately 1 hour, and you will meet your Kisambi Tours guides, cooks and porters. After completing gate registration, begin your Kilimanjaro trek. Walk along a narrow trail through the rain forest of Kilimanjaro for most of the hike. Eat a picnic lunch at Kisambioni. After lunch continue walking through the rainforest until you reach Mandara Hut. Relax for the rest of the day or take a short walk to Maundi Crater. The views to the east over Taveta and to the northwest to Mawenzi Peak are stunning on a clear day, making the short hike well worth the effort. The A–frame Mandara Huts can accommodate up to seventy people and consist of several sleeping huts and a dining area. All of Marangu’s huts have beds with mattresses.
- Elevation: 1860m to 2700m
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 8 km
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
- Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, leave Mandara Hut and Kilimanjaro’s forests for Horombo Hut. Most of the day’s hike will be through Kilimanjaro’s moorland, a rocky landscape with desert–like plants. Eat a picnic lunch at Kambi ya Taabu before continuing to Horombo Hut. If the weather is clear, enjoy beautiful views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut at around 3pm and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing. Although extremely busy, the Horombo Huts are considered to be the nicest on Kilimanjaro. The small, A–frame buildings can accommodate up to eight people each and provide lodging for hikers ascending, descending and acclimatizing. Horombo can accommodate up to one hundred hikers and many more porters, cooks and guides.

- Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
- Distance: 12 km
- Difficulty: Moderate

Elevation Gain: 1,030 meters, 3,380 feet Leave Horombo Hut after breakfast to hike through the moorland and alpine desert of Kilimanjaro’s upper altitudes. After hiking for about an hour arrive at Maua River, a small mountain stream. After Maua, the terrain becomes flatter and the vegetation begins to disappear. Break for lunch at Middle Red Hill. After lunch, continue on a steady incline for another two hours through Kilimanjaro’s Saddle. Although the environment on the way to Kibo is a bleak desert with little vegetation, you will see many stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Reach Kibo Hut around 3pm to rest and prepare for your midnight climb.
- Elevation: 3720m to 4720m
- Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
- Distance: 10 km

Around midnight, awake for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The hike begins with a demanding five hours hike to Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. Although this is considered to be the easiest of the three crater ascent paths, it is still extremely difficult. The first major rest stop, William’s Point, lies at 5000 meters and is approximately a two hours hike Kibo Hut. Continue on for thirty minutes before beginning the rocky switchbacks that will continue to Gillman’s Point (5,681 meters)

Great excursion to the waterfall with a coffee tour Very nice hike with our guide William to the waterfall at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. He told us a lot about the plants, animals, and Materuni. Afterwards, we were allowed to learn how coffee is made from raw coffee beans. Freshly brewed, really very delicious! A warm meal rounded off the beautiful day. We can highly recommend this excursion.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Super tourist Great to do. First a nice walk around the area. And slowly you hear the waterfall and when you are there it gives you a beautiful view of the waterfall. Walking back, you come to the coffee plantation and first get a super lunch. After lunch, everything is told about the beans and what you need to make coffee. After the explanation, you will grind beans the old-fashioned way. And it was sung. After grinding, the coffee is brewed and deliciously drunk.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Amazing Materuni ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A highly recommended experience! We hiked to Materuni Waterfalls, had a big and tasty lunch at the village, and then visited the coffee plantations and enjoyed the traditional coffee ceremony, taking part in the whole process. We had such a great time! A special mention to our guide, Colman Alexander, who was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He is also a botanist, so along the way he taught us lots of interesting things about the local plants, wildlife and culture, which made the experience even more special. We’d also like to thank our driver, who was very kind and attentive throughout the day and made all our transfers comfortable and enjoyable. We 100% recommend Colman Alexander and this whole experience. Definitely worth it if you’re visiting the Kilimanjaro area! 🌿🏔️☕️Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Great waterfall hike and coffee experience with Silvester We had a wonderful day at Materuni, thanks largely to our guide Silvester. He led us to the waterfalls with great knowledge and answered all our questions, yet was never intrusive, giving us time to enjoy the scenery at our own pace. The coffee experience afterwards was a lovely highlight too. Friendly, calm and very competent, highly recommendedPosted on Tripadvisor![]()

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An amazing experience with Robert in Materuni* We had an absolutely fantastic experience in Materuni with our local guide, Robert. From the very beginning, he was incredibly friendly, attentive and professional, and he made the whole experience truly special. We visited the Materuni Waterfalls, where Robert taught us so much about the local culture, vegetation, wildlife and the area in general. He has a huge amount of knowledge and clearly loves sharing it with visitors. We then enjoyed a delicious local meal and learned about the whole coffee-making process — from how the coffee is picked to how it is traditionally prepared. And, of course, we got to taste it at the end! It was a really authentic and fascinating experience. Robert speaks excellent English, explains everything very clearly and is always happy to answer questions. He also took amazing photos of us, capturing some really special moments that we will keep as memories of our trip. What made the experience even better was the opportunity to learn about Materuni and Tanzanian culture from someone so passionate and knowledgeable. We highly recommend this experience, and especially Robert as a guide. If you are visiting the area, don’t hesitate to book it — you won’t regret it! Thank you so much, Robert, for such an unforgettable day! 🇹🇿❤️Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
