Tour Plan

Immerse yourself in the authentic culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality of Materuni Village, nestled on the lush slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Located just 15 km from Moshi Town, Materuni is a charming traditional village and home to the Chagga people. As one of the last villages before Kilimanjaro National Park, it offers a unique opportunity to experience authentic village life, rich cultural traditions, and spectacular natural scenery.

Your adventure begins in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Moshi by our friendly, professional English-speaking guide. Enjoy a scenic drive through the beautiful Kilimanjaro countryside before arriving in Materuni Village, where your experience begins.

Materuni Waterfall Experience

Your first adventure takes you on a guided hike to the magnificent Materuni Waterfall, approximately 40–45 minutes from the village. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights into Chagga culture, traditional village life, and the surrounding flora and fauna.

Enjoy breathtaking views of the lush green valleys, coffee and banana plantations, and, weather permitting, the majestic snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Upon reaching the waterfall, marvel at the spectacular cascade plunging more than 80 metres into a natural pool below. Take time to relax, capture memorable photographs, or enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool mountain water.

Traditional Chagga Lunch & Local Hospitality

After exploring the waterfall, enjoy a leisurely walk back to Mama Agnes' Home, where a delicious, freshly prepared traditional Chagga lunch awaits you.

Experience genuine local hospitality while enjoying authentic Tanzanian dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. You will also have the opportunity to taste traditional Chagga banana beer, a unique cultural speciality that has been enjoyed by generations.

Authentic Chagga Coffee Experience

Your cultural adventure continues with an interactive coffee experience, one of Materuni's most memorable traditions.

Discover the fascinating journey of coffee, from cultivation and harvesting to drying, roasting, grinding, and brewing. Participate in the traditional coffee-making process alongside local villagers, accompanied by lively Chagga songs and dances.

The experience concludes with a freshly brewed cup of delicious Kilimanjaro coffee, prepared entirely by hand.

Evening Relaxation & Overnight at Materuni Homes

After a wonderful day of exploration and cultural discovery, settle into Materuni Homes, a peaceful accommodation surrounded by lush greenery and spectacular mountain scenery.

Spend the late afternoon relaxing, enjoying the fresh mountain air, and admiring the beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

For those wishing to deepen their cultural experience, an optional traditional Chagga cooking class is available in the evening. Join local hosts in preparing authentic dishes using fresh ingredients and traditional cooking methods.

Later, enjoy a delicious dinner and unwind in the peaceful atmosphere of Materuni Village before retiring for a restful night's sleep.

Experience the true spirit of Kilimanjaro through nature, culture, authentic local hospitality, and unforgettable moments in Materuni Village.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at Materuni Homes, prepare for an exciting cycling adventure through the beautiful countryside surrounding Moshi.

Your experience begins with a short introduction and safety briefing from your professional cycling guide. Once you are comfortable and ready, set off on your bicycle, leaving the bustling streets of Moshi behind as you gradually make your way into the peaceful rural surroundings.

Discover Rural Villages & Sugarcane Plantations

As you cycle beyond the town, the scenery transforms into beautiful agricultural landscapes, traditional villages, and expansive sugarcane plantations.

Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the daily lives of local communities, traditional farming practices, and the important role agriculture plays in the region's economy.

Continue cycling through the lush sugarcane-growing areas, where you will learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of this important crop.

Nature, Wildlife & Conservation Experience

The journey takes you through a beautiful natural conservation area, where lush vegetation and peaceful surroundings create a refreshing escape into nature.

Keep your eyes open for colourful birdlife, playful monkeys, and other small wildlife that inhabit the area. Although wildlife sightings depend on natural conditions, your knowledgeable guide will help you discover the fascinating plants, birds, and animals found along the route.

Great excursion to the waterfall with a coffee tour Very nice hike with our guide William to the waterfall at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. He told us a lot about the plants, animals, and Materuni. Afterwards, we were allowed to learn how coffee is made from raw coffee beans. Freshly brewed, really very delicious! A warm meal rounded off the beautiful day. We can highly recommend this excursion.

Super tourist Great to do. First a nice walk around the area. And slowly you hear the waterfall and when you are there it gives you a beautiful view of the waterfall. Walking back, you come to the coffee plantation and first get a super lunch. After lunch, everything is told about the beans and what you need to make coffee. After the explanation, you will grind beans the old-fashioned way. And it was sung. After grinding, the coffee is brewed and deliciously drunk.

Amazing Materuni ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A highly recommended experience! We hiked to Materuni Waterfalls, had a big and tasty lunch at the village, and then visited the coffee plantations and enjoyed the traditional coffee ceremony, taking part in the whole process. We had such a great time! A special mention to our guide, Colman Alexander, who was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He is also a botanist, so along the way he taught us lots of interesting things about the local plants, wildlife and culture, which made the experience even more special. We’d also like to thank our driver, who was very kind and attentive throughout the day and made all our transfers comfortable and enjoyable. We 100% recommend Colman Alexander and this whole experience. Definitely worth it if you’re visiting the Kilimanjaro area! 🌿🏔️☕️

Great waterfall hike and coffee experience with Silvester We had a wonderful day at Materuni, thanks largely to our guide Silvester. He led us to the waterfalls with great knowledge and answered all our questions, yet was never intrusive, giving us time to enjoy the scenery at our own pace. The coffee experience afterwards was a lovely highlight too. Friendly, calm and very competent, highly recommended

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An amazing experience with Robert in Materuni* We had an absolutely fantastic experience in Materuni with our local guide, Robert. From the very beginning, he was incredibly friendly, attentive and professional, and he made the whole experience truly special. We visited the Materuni Waterfalls, where Robert taught us so much about the local culture, vegetation, wildlife and the area in general. He has a huge amount of knowledge and clearly loves sharing it with visitors. We then enjoyed a delicious local meal and learned about the whole coffee-making process — from how the coffee is picked to how it is traditionally prepared. And, of course, we got to taste it at the end! It was a really authentic and fascinating experience. Robert speaks excellent English, explains everything very clearly and is always happy to answer questions. He also took amazing photos of us, capturing some really special moments that we will keep as memories of our trip. What made the experience even better was the opportunity to learn about Materuni and Tanzanian culture from someone so passionate and knowledgeable. We highly recommend this experience, and especially Robert as a guide. If you are visiting the area, don’t hesitate to book it — you won’t regret it! Thank you so much, Robert, for such an unforgettable day! 🇹🇿❤️
