Tour Plan
Your experience begins with a morning departure from Moshi towards Materuni Village, located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and home to the Chagga people. Upon arrival, you will register at the village office and meet your local English-speaking guide.
Begin your walk through the village and surrounding countryside towards Materuni Waterfall. The trail takes you through lush vegetation and local farmland while your guide introduces you to Chagga traditions, village life and the plants and wildlife found in the area. The walk to the waterfall takes approximately 40 minutes. On reaching the waterfall, enjoy the impressive scenery and the cool natural environment, with time for photographs and, if conditions are suitable, a refreshing swim. After the waterfall visit, walk back to the village and enjoy a freshly prepared traditional Chagga lunch using local ingredients. You will also have an opportunity to taste a local banana beer as part of the cultural experience.
After lunch, discover the traditional coffee-making process. Learn how coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and prepared, and take part in grinding the beans while enjoying traditional Chagga songs and dances. Finally, taste the coffee prepared during the experience before transferring to Materuni Homes. Spend the evening relaxing at the accommodation and enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the Kilimanjaro foothills.
Overnight: Materuni Homes
Meals: Lunch & dinner
After breakfast, depart early with your English-speaking guide and travel through the countryside towards Kambi ya Chooka, an authentic Maasai village founded by local Maasai people. The journey takes you through African bushland, sugar-cane plantations, dry riverbeds and landscapes dotted with baobab and acacia trees.
On arrival, meet members of the Maasai community and learn about their culture, traditions and everyday life. Walk through the village with your guide and have the opportunity to interact with local people and visit a traditional Maasai home. You will also learn about traditional Maasai medicine and have the opportunity to taste local Maasai tea. Photography should always be done respectfully and with permission. After the village experience, continue towards Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka Hot Springs. The journey takes approximately one hour and 20 minutes and passes through changing landscapes of sugar-cane plantations, African scrubland, baobabs and acacia trees.
Spend the afternoon relaxing beside the clear turquoise water, swimming or simply enjoying the natural surroundings. Despite the name, the water is refreshing rather than genuinely hot and is associated with water flowing from the Kilimanjaro area.

Great excursion to the waterfall with a coffee tour Very nice hike with our guide William to the waterfall at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. He told us a lot about the plants, animals, and Materuni. Afterwards, we were allowed to learn how coffee is made from raw coffee beans. Freshly brewed, really very delicious! A warm meal rounded off the beautiful day. We can highly recommend this excursion.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Super tourist Great to do. First a nice walk around the area. And slowly you hear the waterfall and when you are there it gives you a beautiful view of the waterfall. Walking back, you come to the coffee plantation and first get a super lunch. After lunch, everything is told about the beans and what you need to make coffee. After the explanation, you will grind beans the old-fashioned way. And it was sung. After grinding, the coffee is brewed and deliciously drunk.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Amazing Materuni ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A highly recommended experience! We hiked to Materuni Waterfalls, had a big and tasty lunch at the village, and then visited the coffee plantations and enjoyed the traditional coffee ceremony, taking part in the whole process. We had such a great time! A special mention to our guide, Colman Alexander, who was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He is also a botanist, so along the way he taught us lots of interesting things about the local plants, wildlife and culture, which made the experience even more special. We’d also like to thank our driver, who was very kind and attentive throughout the day and made all our transfers comfortable and enjoyable. We 100% recommend Colman Alexander and this whole experience. Definitely worth it if you’re visiting the Kilimanjaro area! 🌿🏔️☕️Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Great waterfall hike and coffee experience with Silvester We had a wonderful day at Materuni, thanks largely to our guide Silvester. He led us to the waterfalls with great knowledge and answered all our questions, yet was never intrusive, giving us time to enjoy the scenery at our own pace. The coffee experience afterwards was a lovely highlight too. Friendly, calm and very competent, highly recommendedPosted on Tripadvisor![]()

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An amazing experience with Robert in Materuni* We had an absolutely fantastic experience in Materuni with our local guide, Robert. From the very beginning, he was incredibly friendly, attentive and professional, and he made the whole experience truly special. We visited the Materuni Waterfalls, where Robert taught us so much about the local culture, vegetation, wildlife and the area in general. He has a huge amount of knowledge and clearly loves sharing it with visitors. We then enjoyed a delicious local meal and learned about the whole coffee-making process — from how the coffee is picked to how it is traditionally prepared. And, of course, we got to taste it at the end! It was a really authentic and fascinating experience. Robert speaks excellent English, explains everything very clearly and is always happy to answer questions. He also took amazing photos of us, capturing some really special moments that we will keep as memories of our trip. What made the experience even better was the opportunity to learn about Materuni and Tanzanian culture from someone so passionate and knowledgeable. We highly recommend this experience, and especially Robert as a guide. If you are visiting the area, don’t hesitate to book it — you won’t regret it! Thank you so much, Robert, for such an unforgettable day! 🇹🇿❤️Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
